Keep your bits separated. I keep all my MDF bits in a separate plastic container. All my metal cutting bits in a second container. And all the remaining or unused bits in yet a third container. I like using the little tackle box containers you get at Wal-Mart for a couple bucks.
Let me clarify MDF bits. An MDF bit is a bit that has come in contact with? MDF or particle board. Once it has, don’t use it on anything else.

When cutting wood, plastic and metal at the proper speed and feed rates, the bits will remain sharp for a reasonable amount of cutting.
On MDF or particle board this is not true. A single cut on MDF or particle board will dull the bit. You can still use the bit effectively on this material but when cutting wood, plastic and aluminum you wont get good results with a dull bit.
